Behind the Meter / From the Grid
Data centers can receive electricity from the regional grid or from dedicated generation located on or near the site. The two arrangements create different infrastructure, reliability and regulatory questions.

What This Graphic Shows
There are two broad ways to supply a large data-center load. In the traditional grid model, power from multiple generators moves through the regional transmission and distribution system before reaching the data center. In a behind-the-meter arrangement, dedicated generation is located on or near the customer site and supplies some or all of the facility's electricity more directly.
Behind-the-meter does not necessarily mean disconnected from the grid. A facility may retain a grid connection for backup, supplemental power, or other operating needs. Likewise, grid-supplied facilities can use contractual arrangements tied to particular generation resources even though electricity physically flows through the shared regional system.
Ohio is becoming an important test case for dedicated generation. Cleanview reports hundreds of megawatts of behind-the-meter gas generation under construction for Ohio data-center projects. The distinction matters because the choice of power architecture affects generation siting, transmission needs, fuel infrastructure, emissions, reliability, and who bears different system costs.
